Bettie Pain Polish - Bowie Collection Swatches & Review

Hi guys,

Today on the blog I have the new Bowie Collection from the Australian artisan brand Bettie Pain Polish. Personally I think the best Indie polishes are the ones from Australia, but I may be bias because I think we do most things better than the rest of the world ;)

David Bowie was a legend and an icon and inspired generations of 'misfits' and 'weirdos' to embrace their strange, and in doing so influenced some of the best new artists of our generation. I know Bowie was a huge influence to Megan, the creator of Bettie Pain Polish, so I knew how special this collection was to her and that it would be incredible.

I wasn't wrong.

The polishes are so unique and gorgeous and their formulas are so easy to apply and self level like a dream! I only applied top coat to the first polish 'China Girl' as it dried with a slight textured finish, but all the other polishes have been photographed without top coat. They didn't need them!

Let's get right into the swatches!

China Girl is a berry red jelly with lots of purple translucent glitters and a slight scattered holo. I took photos both without a top coat and with as I wanted to show it's slight textured finish without a topcoat. It doesn't have a rough feel to it at all and is so striking, almost resembling animal skin. When I applied the first coat it seemed so sheer that I thought I was going to need 4 coats at least to make it opaque, but was pleasantly surprised that it was almost totally opaque on the second coat! I used 3 coats for the photos below to even it out perfectly.

Heroes is a soft lavender crelly with silver flakies and a very subtle holo shimmer. The shimmer makes the lavender shade look like it’s glowing in the sunlight, gives it a beautiful depth and also compliments the silver flakies beautifully. I applied three coats for the photos but two would have been enough if I hadn’t been photographing it, as I didn’t want it to look sheer on my tips in my photos under the lights. The formula is nice and creamy and levels quickly and perfectly. I used 3 coats for the photos below and no topcoat.

Sorrow is a nude/pale brown creme with blue, purple & green colour-shift flakies throughout. This is the perfect nude for my skin tone and I love that it has flakies throughout it as it really gives it a wow factor that most nudes just don’t have. The formula of this polish is incredible. It’s a two coat wonder which is almost impossible for a nude polish! I used 2 coats for the photos below and no topcoat.

Space Oddity is a dark green almost black holo with a blue and teal shimmer and scattered holo effect that is strong in direct sunlight but impossible to catch on camera! Can you holo capturing nailies share with me your secrets please?? My camera hates holo but my nails looooove them! This polish is my favorite from the collection as it dries almost matte and is so moody and chic. I love it on my nails and wore it for almost a week because I didn’t want to take it off! I used 2 coats for the photos below and no topcoat.

Ziggy Stardust is a pale silver sheer with a very strong blue shimmer and holo with smaller holo glitters throughout. This polish has so much depth and individuality to it and was the first I reached for when I opened them because it’s so eye catching. It’s like nothing else I own! It applied perfectly and levelled on it’s own so didn’t need a topcoat to smooth it out. I used 2 coats for the photos below and no topcoat.

And finally, Starman is a blue to purple to gold/red/burgandy duochrome with subtle silver sparks. I call this polish galaxy in a bottle. It is so beautiful on the nail but just so hard to capture the shift on camera as the purple is that specific shade of purple that always photographs blue.. You ladies who photograph your nails know the one! The shift is so noticable in person and I found myself staring at my nails all day with this on. It’s just so beautiful! I would say this has a stronger royal blue base with a purple/red/gold shift but it just takes on so many different colours that it is a true chameleon on the nail. I love it. I used 3 coats for the photos below and no topcoat.

That shift!!! <3

This collection is just so beautiful and unique and each polish applies and looks so lovely on the nail. They all level perfectly and dry so well that no top coat is necessary. I was so honored when Megan contacted me to swatch them for her and I think she has done the most amazing job in creating these beautiful polishes.

These polishes will be available from March 19th from the Bettie Pain Polish store, however Bettie Pain only ship within Australia from their store due to our strict postage laws.

However if you want them stocked in the states then let Shiro Cosmetics know you want it stocked and if demand is high enough it will be available to the US. Or I can always be a mule for you ;)

Have a great weekend!
